A RUINED BAOLI OF HARYANA


                                              TOHANA BAOLI 

 Nothing can be seen, on Baoli due to wild growth and badly use by custodians. It requires immediate Conservation and Preservation work by ASI and Haryana Archaelogical and museum department.

1. NAME OF BAOL I : TOHANA BAOLI (PURAANI BAY)
2. LOCATION      :    Tohana, District- Fatehabad (Haryana)
                                          Latitude - 29.7163`N, Longitude- 75.9057`E
3. APPROACH      :   700m to old bus stand, Near Police Station 
4. PERIOD          :      16th C.E.
5. STATUS          :     Unprotected  





                                                    
6. DESCRIPTION: The baoli is also known by the name of “PURAANI BAY”. Nothing is known about the architect of the baoli or the date of the construction, however, during the last century both Hindus and Muslims laid equal claim to it. Rodgers, arbitrarily places its construction during the time of the Lodi rulers (1451-1526)[1]. As per Dr. Subhash Parihar, the baoli is located on Delhi-Multan route 2[2] via kaithal Ftehbad and some punjab region and can be suggested to have been used for traveler’s drinking water and as a resting place. Now  condition is very ruined and not a single architectural elements can be seen. It look like Bhai ki baoli which situated in Kaihal.

7. ARCHITECTURE: This Baoli is similar to the Kaithal baoli and covers an overall area of 60mX 7.4m. The semi-octagonal recesses in the sidewalls are 1.7m broad and 0.8m deep. The central opening in the first archway is around 3.1m broad and those on the sides are 1 m broad each. The main arch of the second archway here too has a cusped shape. The additional stairway can also be seen here, situated near the well. The well measuring 5.3m in diameter, has two large sockets near the parapet for affixing the rafters of the wheel for surrounded drawing water. On the ground level, the well is with an octagonal platform of 4.6m side. At present, the water table is said to be merely 8.6m below the parapet. Inscription plate is also visible in the arch. But now no one architecture elements can be seen in baoli, due to wild vegetation growth and can not be reach and enter in baoli.

9. PRESENT CONDITION   : Very Bad in Condition, over all view that the baoli used as a dump yard for garbage by the custodian. It is fully covered with thick vegetation growth can be seen and currently the baoli is used as a garbage pit, no status has been accredited and the stairs and walls are totally broken. Nothing can be seen of in structure due to wild growth. Local’s peoples don’t know about this baoli and its importance. Not accessible to approach roads.
